How to Prepare for Your First Team CrossTraining Competition

Communication, a dry run of the format and logistics: how to prepare for your first team CrossTraining competition and turn up confident, even if you're not the strongest.

Competing as a team for the first time is as nerve-racking as it is exciting. You don’t have to be the strongest in the box to sign up — with this basic preparation you’ll turn up feeling confident.

Train your communication, not just your fitness

In a team competition, the result depends as much on coordination as on individual strength: deciding who starts each station, how you rotate and how you cheer each other on through the tough stretch matters just as much as each person’s physical performance.

Rehearse the format before race day

If you’re going to compete in teams of 2 to 6, like in the weekend Mega WOD at Redfield T&F, train that same format several times before the competition: rotations, transitions and active rest are things you train, not things you improvise on the day.

Sort out the logistics in advance

  • Check the divisions and the rulebook for the event well ahead of time, not the week before.
  • Get your kit ready (shoes, clothes, water) the night before, not in a rush that same morning.
  • Rest well for the 2-3 days beforehand — turning up fresh counts for more than one last-minute session.
In a team competition, the best athlete isn’t the one who lifts the most: it’s the one their team can count on at the worst moment of the WOD.

Most importantly: enjoy it

Your first team competition isn’t about winning, it’s about sharing the experience with your training group — in fact, it’s one of the reasons people keep training as a team long after their first time.
